The Origins of the NATO Strap

The NATO strap isn’t just another watch strap—it’s a piece of military history. Born in 1973, the strap was originally issued by the British Ministry of Defence under the official designation "G10."
Why G10? Because soldiers had to fill out a G1098 form to get one.

Designed for function over form, the NATO strap was meant to withstand the harshest conditions. Made from tough nylon and featuring a sturdy stainless-steel buckle, it ensured that a soldier’s watch stayed securely on the wrist—even if a spring bar failed. The strap also had an extra loop that kept the watch firmly in place, preventing it from sliding around during combat.

Why the Name "NATO"?

Interestingly, has nothing to do with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The name comes from the NATO Stock Number (NSN) system used to standardize military gear. Over time, collectors and enthusiasts adopted the term "NATO strap," and it stuck. Today, our premium Cordovan straps continue this legacy with materials that stand the test of time.

Built for Battle, Adopted by Watch Enthusiasts

Originally available only in "Admiralty Grey," the NATO strap was all about function. But as military surplus gear found its way into civilian hands, watch lovers quickly took notice. The strap’s rugged appeal, affordability, and comfort made it an instant hit.

Soon, companies started producing NATO straps in various colors, as you can find in our collection—especially after James Bond (played by Sean Connery) sported a striped version in Goldfinger (1964). Even though his strap wasn’t technically a NATO (it lacked the extra loop), the association was enough to propel its popularity. Our collection includes classic designs inspired by this rich history, offering a stylish and reliable option for any watch.
