The Allpress Story, much more than an espresso

Coffee is a complex beverage, but to keep it simple Allpress focus their attention on great tasting espresso. The distinctive Allpress brand, the cup and its associated colours are recognized worldwide. When you see it you can be sure of one thing – the flavour in the cup is of the highest quality. From the very first customer in 1989 to this day, Allpress Espresso has bridged the gap between roaster and café with a standing invite to visit and learn the art of delivering the perfect espresso.

The origins of Allpress Espresso

The origins of Allpress Espresso can be traced back to Vic Park Market in Auckland, NZ. It was 1986 and Michael Allpress was gaining traction with Allpress Espresso Carts – an idea relatively unheard of back then. In 1990, his fascination with flavour and great espresso persisted and led to him roasting his own beans. This was the beginning of Allpress Espresso and eventually the focus was shifted from coffee carts to becoming a wholesale coffee specialist.

In search of the perfect cup, Mike discovered the importance of green bean selection, superior roasting methods and innovative espresso equipment. These factors – matched with design-led innovation – have been essential in creating the quality, reliability and great taste that you know Allpress for today.

Mikes obsession with the best tasting coffee involves careful selection of green beans using only the top 10% Arabica beans. Allpress can secure continual supply by working directly with the growers and their exporters to ensure consistency and quality across their blends.

After a decade of learning about coffee, and drinking every cup with quiet judgment, Mike began to notice the connection between hot air roasting and delicious espresso. Hot air roasting allows for consistent and meticulous control over the flavour profile – the beans roast evenly in a stream of hot air with no risk of scorching meaning a cleaner and sweeter tasting coffee. After many years of re-building an off-the-shelf hot air roaster, Mike’s passion led him to partner with another Mike (Scoobie). This resulted in ART – Air Roasting Technologies – a hot air roaster customized for flavour first. A roaster built by a roaster.

Knowledge

Allpress Espresso has built a wealth of knowledge over the 30 years of roasting coffee and helped over 1000 independent cafes find their unique contribution to the world of coffee and food. With the focus still firmly on flavour, they continue to pioneer in the coffee world.

The Allpress story continues to grow and with roasters in Auckland, Dunedin, Sydney, Melbourne and London, the decision was made to make the move into Tokyo. Mike saw the alignment between the Japanese culture and Allpress’ values. Matched with the beautifully unique space on offer in Monzen Nakacho, Allpress knew the time was right to make the move into Tokyo. Once an old timber warehouse, the space has been fully restored in character with its past and what is left is as much a space for roasting coffee as it is a welcoming spot for people to gather, connect and converse. It’s an exciting hub for Allpress in the Japanese market.
