The Kahua leather cap is handcrafted from 14oZ waxed organic cotton. 100% organic cotton is protected by a wax that helps repel water. Thanks to its 14oz weight, it becomes a very resistant item made to last over time. The patch and the back strap are cut by hand with vegetable-tanned leather, and the latter allows the size of the cap to be adjusted. Its metal clasp in old gold provides security.
Originally, the concept of waxed cotton was developed in the early 15th century, the quintessential century for sailors. The North Sea Scottish herring fleets, operating from ports on the east coast, began treating their ships’ sails with fish oils and animal fats in an attempt to waterproof their sails, keeping them light and efficient. When these sails broke from use, their pieces were used as capes to resist strong winds and sea mist, keeping sailors warm and dry. These capes were the pioneers of the famous fisherman’s raincoat.
