Café Work Stories by Javier S.Medina

[nm_banner image_id=”4801″]Javier Sánchez Medina is an artisan of the moment. His dedication and skill drew attention right from the start. Born in Extremadura, he has made Madrid his adopted home. At one point he almost became a firefighter, and today he still can’t explain what changed his mind to become an artisan. But he’s sure he doesn’t regret the decision. Javier loves being an artisan and loves his profession.[nm_banner_slider][nm_banner image_id=”4809″][nm_banner image_id=”4805″][nm_banner image_id=”4802″][/nm_banner_slider]He works completely by hand. The tools he uses were inherited from his father, and he wields them with precision and great care. They are as authentic as the Malasaña street where his workshop is located: Calle de El Escorial. The workshop has become a bit crowded of late, so he is opening another one nearby. Javier has figured out how to update traditional crafts like basket weaving and esparto grass weaving for the present day. His pieces with wicker, esparto grass and natural fibres are mainly organic hunting trophies and other products like sunburst mirrors. Seeing how he works and the liturgy surrounding the process is a thrilling sight to behold. His workshop is austere, yet elegant. The premises breathe artistic genius and radiate his admiration for things well made. Javier loves authentic and simple things, which attracted us to him from the start. Meeting people who represent and transmit these values makes us love our job even more. Visiting Javier’s workshop is quite an experience. At Café Leather Supply we are very grateful to him and know he will be a lifelong friend. Not to be missed in Malasaña.[nm_banner_slider][nm_banner image_id=”4807″][nm_banner image_id=”4803″][nm_banner image_id=”4806″][/nm_banner_slider]
